For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today the recipient is RRR which is the acronym for the Robeson Road Runners.

The Robeson Road Runners is a group of runners, walkers, cyclists, triathletes and individuals concerned about the betterment of their community. They are located in Robeson County, North Carolina and work to bring awareness to the idea that fitness can be fun and should be enjoyed by the entire family.

One way they accomplish their mission is to sponsor an event in conjunction with the City of Lumberton called the Rumba on the Lumber.

Rules of the Challenge

Organizing and participating in the 30-Day Shout Coach4aday Challenge is very simple. Below are the steps.

March 5th-Robeson Road Runners

In the 1980’s and early 1990’s one of the premier road races in the State of North Carolina was the Natural Light 10K. Thanks to the support of a local businessman named Bob Caton and an All-Merican runner named Jeff Cushing the event thrived. In the mid 1990’s for some unknown reason the event went away.

The inception of the Robeson Road Runners dates back to the summer of 1999, spurred by the curiosity of Lumberton’s newcomer Maria Parker. Discovering no active promotion of the race, Maria’s determination led to the establishment of the Robeson Road Runners. With her persuasive efforts, Maria enlisted early founders Jeff Neelon, Jeff Cushing, Dan Kenney, and Matt Thompson.

As the club flourished, a cadre of community figures including Mike DeCinti, Wendell Staton, Kelly Haskins, Jef Lambdin, Katie Davis, Marion Thompson, Karen Granger, Sonya Tinsley, Owen Thomas, and Scott Billingsley assumed roles as presidents or key leaders, contributing significantly to the club’s growth and impact.

The First Rumba was held in February 2000 on a cold and blustery Saturday. There was only the 5K race but over time other events were added including a Friday Night Pasta Party, 1 Mile Fun Run, North of the Border Chili, and lots of live music.

This past weekend the RRR with lots of support from numerous sponsors held another great event. For two days the concept of fitness being fun resonated with hundreds of people. Big shoutout to RRR for modeling the importance of fitness.
