I have posted before that I often come across words in my leadership listening or reading that I don’t know. Welcome to the word EPIGENOME.

What I found fascinating about understanding more about EPIGENOME was something from Dr. Mark Rowe.

He was talking about that our DNA is not the dominant factor in how we express ourselves. He talked about how the majority of our genes are controlled by a master switch which is known by people smarter than me as EPIGINOME.

This switch is influenced strongly by our diet, exercise, sleep, and stress. In essence Dr. Rowe says that the best prescription medicine we can all take is lifestyle. He is a medical doctor as he says that “grew up with a pill for every ill”. He now believes that mentality is not the best approach.

He did a TED Talk and talks about what he believes we all should know including the importance of our EPIGENOME. He has three big points he makes to his audience.

1. Your DNA is not your destiny your lifestyle is.

2. Learn to Grow from Setbacks

3. Self Care is not Selfish Care

I now know that something called an EPIGINOME is an important switch for me to live a fulfilling life.

I just have to wire sleep, diet, exercise, and stress reducing activities to that master switch. You can read about 9 ways to change your EPIGENOME in article by Alan Horsager
