#Shrink September 29

For September I am participating in the 30-Day Literary Lesson Coach4aday Challenge today the focus is on how to SHRINK the task of changing.

Organizations, teams, businesses, churches, and individuals all struggle with change. One quote I love is “People don’t mind change as long as they don’t have to change“. If we do not change, we cannot grow or improve. Improving is what gives each of my days purpose.

The last book I am reviewing this month is one I have written about often. It is titled “Switch: How to Change Things when Change is Hard”

Literary Lesson from Chip and Dan Heath

Switch is a book written by Chip and Dan Heath. They are brothers that are fascinated by different parts of human behavior. The book is about how to accomplish change and the premise is you have to get your brain’s switch turned on. A lot that is in this book resonates with me but Chapter 6 points out that sometimes you have to SHRINK the change to get people believing.

As a coach I did this all the time. I never focused on the ultimate goal but broke them down and gave players a chance to experience small wins. Those small wins in practice lead to big wins in the game and season.

There is a great book review on their book on the Wall Street Journal

Don’t let the size of any change you want to make intimidate you. Just SHRINK it.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
