For February my 30 Day Challenge (actually 29) was push-ups. Today I am going to RECAP what happened with my Push-Up Challenge.

I posted what my objective was with my February 1 post. I just wanted to improve. As you will read below improving by adding a daily habit should be doable for me.

I found a video by Andrew Perlot that served as my guide. So here is what I experienced, what I learned, and what happens moving forward.

What I Experienced

The really cool thing was I got other people to join me. In January when I did the Dry Challenge I had two other friends commit to being my accountability partners. For the February Push-Up Challenge I had 7 people Rebecca, Shannon, Kyle, Mack, Tito, Tony, and Carey all join me. It was great getting updates on how everyone was doing. Not all of us were at the same starting point but the goal was to improve. As of last report each one of us accomplished the goal of making Push-Ups part of our daily routine. Congrats to all.

Some good news, I was able to do push-ups each and every morning this month. Some personal humbling news, I could not do one CORRECT military style push-up on Jan 31st. Following Andrew Perlot guidance I started my daily routine with Knee Push-Ups.

On February 1st I completed 3 sets of Knee Push-ups (3-2-1) which was a total of 6. By February 20th and for the rest of the month I was able to do three sets of Knee Push-ups and got a combined total of 30. On February 22nd I did 3 sets (20-5-5).

As the month progressed I began to add a modified push called a ball push-ups. I placed the ball under my chest. It was a good progression from the knee push-up.

On February 17th I did two (2) correct military style push-ups. I also did 3 sets of knee push-ups that morning (10-8-6).On February 19th I did two (2) correct military push-ups again. From February 20th to end of the month I completed some combination of 30 push-ups each morning. I did them in three sets with a minute in between.

This morning I completed 6 military push-ups. If someone ask about my 30 Day Push-Up Challenge my RECAP is:

“I went from zero to six in twenty-nine days”.

What I learned

That a simple exercise like a push-up can do wonders for your abdominal core muscles. It also gave me an opportunity to fight a mental battle every morning. I didn’t want to get down on the floor and do them.

I didn’t wake up each morning feeling like doing push-ups. I was always dealing with the thought of just skipping one day. What gave me the fuel to move forward was having accountability partners. They gave me the motivation to begin each morning.

I know I have a tendency to behave as an upholder. Upholders want to meet commitments they have made to others along with those they made to themselves. When I finished each morning it provided me a host of positive emotions. Research tells us that chemicals that make us feel happier kicked in when my last push-up was complete.

Moving Forward

The 30 Day Push-Up Challenge has gone from a habit to a daily morning routine. I feel better about myself that I took a physical task that I was horrible at and improved. I still have a long range goal to be able to do 3 sets of military push-ups and total 30. Not there yet but moving forward.

Will share my 30 Day Challenge for March tomorrow.
