Today for the 30-Day Podcast Coach4aday Challenge my theme is BUSINESS.

Lesson learned from my days as a coach was the leadership concepts could transfer from different professions. Working in college athletics I read a lot of fantastic books written about the world of BUSINESS. One of the books that really resonated with me was written by Jim Collins. The title was “Good to Great“.

Day 20 Podcast-Tim Ferris Show

If you love to take a deep dive into the thinking of great leaders the Tim Ferris Show is a podcast you should listen to. His episodes are called long formats because they often are 2 hours or longer. In his words he deconstructs the philosophies of great leaders from all walks of life. In Episode 361 Tim had Jim Collins as his guest. The show was originally aired in February 2019. On this episode some of his most notable business concepts are discussed. Two everyone should read about are the “Hedgehog” and “Flywheel

Podcast Takeaways

This was not the first time I have listened to Jim Collins on a podcast. He has interesting insight into living our lives some of which I have adopted. One is tracking time spent in fulfilling events. I do that each morning calculating the time I spent the previous day engaged in Exercise-Meaningful Work-Time with Family/Friends-and time spent in personal growth.

In his research, Jim Collins found all companies have lucky and unlucky events. I think the same thing can be said for all of us. When these moments happened to good companies, they would double down on those lucky events and get the most out of it allowing them to better handle the unlucky ones. Collins was convinced that approximately the same amount of good and bad luck happens to all companies and all people. He encouraged all of us to leverage and get a good return on “Who Luck“.
