September 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Architectural Coach4aday Challenge each day, we will define an architectural term and provide examples of where it is located. This challenge will let observation, travel, history, and photography all intersect. For Day 13 is WAINSCOTING.

When we bought our home, the dining room—with its stunning wainscoting—was the feature that completely sold us on the house. Standing five feet tall with four rows of panels, it adds a unique distinctiveness to the room’s 11-foot ceilings. To top it all off, the look is beautifully enhanced by a matching plate rail molding.

Well, this month’s challenge let’s all of us that are not architects learn a little more about their language. To do that we have a simple challenge.

Every day we’ll learn one architectural term. Your challenge is to find an example—preferably one you’ve actually seen—and share a photograph, location and brief explanation.

Day 13-Wainscoting

Our home has several other places where this wall covering was utilized. Our staircases and hallways have bead board but the dining room is more of a raised panel.

Here are four types of wainscotting.
