This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday has given us the prompt of “Comparison”. The goal is to take two songs and discuss an association between them.

Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you are able to as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two. Also feel free to offer up your suggestion to this week’s prompt.

Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not.  If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.  Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

Once again I tip my hat to Jim Adams for a weekly prompt that makes you think. Writing about two songs that have an association and comparing them requires a little brain power. I decided to look at two songs that honor or pay tribute to other musicians.

My two songs to compare are “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder and “American Pie” by Don Mclean.

Sir Duke is often classified as funk anthem and was a tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington, who had died in 1974. The lyrics also refer to Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. How many songs have a reference to “Satchmo”? You will find the song on Stevie’s fantastic album released in 1976 called “Songs in the Key of Life”

American Pie ‘and its lyrics “The Day the Music Died’ is all about the tragic deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson Jr.) in a 1959 plane crash.

Each song is a tribute to artists and musicians that left us yet each song is different. Sir Duke is upbeat and American Pie is somber.

Here are the lyrics to Sir Duke written by Stevie Wonder

The lyrics to “American Pie” written by Don McLean. This song is often listed in Top 100 Songs of 20th Century.

Next week the prompt is profile a song about a City, Country. County, State, Town.

  1. Great post Coach! I love these comparisons. I hadn’t thought of it before ☺️

  2. Jim Adams says:

I knew the Stevie Wonder song Sir Duke but I never tried to figure out what this song is about. You made a great comparison with both of these songs being tributes to legends. Thanks for sharing your music again.
