#Disruption July 26

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

We live in a two story house and our laundry room is upstairs. On Father’s Day our twenty -year old washing machine’s water sensor went out. The lack of that part working caused the water to continue to fill the washer until a major DISRUPTION occurred.

The 25 minute flood dumped lots of water on the laundry room floor and came pouring out of the ceiling in our downstairs bedroom and bathroom. Those rooms are located directly under our washer and dryer. It is going to be a long road to recovery.

Repairs begin this week on replacing ceilings, painting walls, and redoing floors. All of our bedroom furniture is scattered all thru the house. It is like we are beginning to audition to be profiled on the TV show Hoarders.

If I need socks check the dining room. If I want a t-shirt check the living room. Need to shower head upstairs. Nothing is where it used to be.

I have to admit that my self-awareness radar is sounding some big alarms on the DISRUPTION I am encountering. I am being warned that my focus on the changes is causing me to become impatient or anxious.

Here is how I have attempted to deal with the emotions caused by DISRUPTIONS. The techniques have come from lessons I have learned during various 30 Day Challenges in 2020.

Two 30 Day Challenge in particular have helped.  In March I read 8 new books and June I watched a daily YouTube video. The books and videos all taught me methods I am applying. Here are five that have been helpful.

  1. I have vented but then after I had my moment I took some action to deal with the changes.
  2. Keep reminding myself when everything is done the spaces being repaired will be better than before the DISRUPTION.
  3. Be proactive in getting ready for the repairs to be made.
  4. Remembering that the washer malfunctioning is an irreversible fact so I don’t need to focus on that.
  5. The most important technique is gratitude. I turn my focus on the blessings I am grateful for. When I let my perspective be framed with gratitude the DISRUPTION loses its intensity.
