This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday has given us the prompt of Danger, Fear, Horror, Nightmare, Terror.

For the entire month of August I am doing a 30 Day Daily Prompt Challenge. Each day it requires you to write about that day’s prompt. So Jim is assisting me greatly with Song Lyric Sunday.

Thriller

Looking at all the prompts there was no doubt that I was choosing Thriller and I am pretty sure I will not be alone. “Thriller” was written by English songwriter Rod Temperton, who had previously written for Jackson’s 1979 album Off the Wall.

The song was released in 1982 and most music historians say that this song and the album with the same name cemented Michael Jackson as the “King of Pop”. Many people forget that Jackson was just 24 when this album was released.

When it comes to setting the bar for album sales “Thriller” with songs such as “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin”, is the gold standard. Sales totals include104 million copies to date; with 65 million of those copies being US purchases.

Production of Thriller began in the spring of 1982 and released on November 30 of the same year. The album featured nine songs, seven of which became number-one hits and were eventually released as singles. The nine songs were:

1. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”
2. “Baby Be Mine”
3. “The Girl Is Mine”
4. “Thriller”
5. “Beat It”
6. “Billie Jean”
7. “Human Nature”
8. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”
9. “The Lady in My Life”

A year after the release of the album the music video Thriller appeared on MTV. That 14 minute mini-movie directed by John Landis changed the way people viewed music videos forever.
