I think every leader has found themselves at some point in the midst of a BORED rut. I have often found that apathy or BOREDOM seems more prevalent after a holiday or vacation.

Sometimes the leadership routines we take on begin to act like an addicting drug. The side effect manifests itself as BOREDOM. Our static leadership rituals begins to make us feel lethargic. When we experience the state of being BORED we lack brain activity. The antidote is stimulating our mental muscles. Every part of the body has to be exercised or it is prone to atrophy. Yet, sometimes it is not exercise of the brain we need but rather rest.

So what can you do if you feel BORED and your life feels like you are stuck in neutral. Well here are some things to consider.

  1. Start a new routine. I am a biased proponent of 30 Day Challenges. Start exercising, start reading, start learning something new, or find a new mentor. Start challenging yourself in some small way it will stimulate your brain.
  2. Seek some advice-who do you trust ask them to listen to what you are feeling. In addition to a trusted friend or family member there are other resources to consider. You can find articles on starting an advisory board or peer group. You also can consider working with a leadership coach.
  3. Search for priorities-There is wise advice that we always should be revisiting. Approach each task by getting it in the correct category with the 4 D’s “Delete, Do It, Delegate or Defer”. I often find that having tasks removed from my plate by delegation or deletion reenergize me.
  4. Sabbatical-Sometimes getting away can change perspective. If you need to improve your health, recover from job burnout, need to develop new skills or clarify what you want to do with your life can a sabbatical work for you? Don’t look for the reasons why it cannot happen but instead look for reasons why it is a good idea. Here is a link for a sabbatical.

Everyone runs the risk of sometimes become BORED with a career or job. The best leaders have the self awareness not to stayed BORED.
