November 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a ‘Saying or Expression” and explore what its origins are. For Day 2 we explore the expression “OFF THE CUFF”

Many of the expressions we use every day have fascinating histories, cultural connections, and lessons that remain relevant today. The goal of this challenge is to explore those.

One of the compliments I often receive is delivering remarks to a group in a public setting. I often on the receiving end of you are excellent at speaking “Off the Cuff“. That is a fallacy because anytime I have to make a presentation there is lots of prep and rehearsing that occurs.

30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge Guidelines

This challenge is not just limited to idioms but can include familiar sayings, expressions, clichés, proverbs, and colloquialisms.

How it works

  1. Share an expression, idiom, cliches, familiar sayings or even a colloquialism.
  2. Attempt to explain its origin and/or meaning
  3. Share it with others using the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 2-Off the Cuff

The expression is American in origin and dates to at least the 1930s. The familiar explanation is that speakers or performers would jot last-minute notes on their shirt cuffs and then use those notes when speaking.
