For September I am participating in the 30-Day Literary Lesson Coach4aday Challenge today the book is on BASKETBALL.

If I could recommend one book for a Basketball Coach to own, it would be Practical Modern Basketball by John Wooden. The book was first published in 1966 and is in its 3rd Edition.

Literary Lessons from John Wooden

It is hard for me to realize that in 2022; John Wooden is not a household name to a lot of college basketball fans. He coached for 40 years and only experienced one losing season and that was his first year.

He led UCLA to four undefeated seasons and won a record ten NCAA Championships. Wooden has the distinction of being the first person inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and as a coach. In fact, in 1939 he was the Player of the Year in College Basketball.

Wooden started out as a high school English teacher. He loved literature and poetry. That early start as an English teacher never left him.

His book is not just about basketball strategies but about leadership philosophy.

At the beginning of the book, John Wooden describes the framework in which he, his staff, and his players do their best work. It is here that Wooden’s famous Pyramid of Success is discussed.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
