August 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Architectural Coach4aday Challenge each day, we will define an architectural term and provide examples of where it is located. This challenge will let observation, travel, history, and photography all intersect. For Day 3 it is GABLE.

In the neighborhood where I live, there are several homes that are more than 100 years old and feature distinctive gables. One house across the street from us has a particularly striking pair of gables centered above its front entrance. Here is a picture of the home.

30-Day Architectural Challenge Guidelines

If you have ever watched Seinfeld, you know that George Constanza always wanted to pretend to be an architect.

Well, this month’s challenge let’s all of us that are not architects learn a little more about their language. To do that we have a simple challenge.

Every day we’ll learn one architectural term. Your challenge is to find an example—preferably one you’ve actually seen—and share a photograph, location and brief explanation.

Day 3-Gable

Architects don’t give a structure a particular shape simply for cosmetic purposes. The gable is a great example of how architectural design can combine beauty with function.

• Weather protection: The sloping roof on either side directs rain and snow away from the building.
• Ventilation: Gable ends can include vents that allow hot, moist air to escape from the attic. In the picture above you can see that this home has a louvered half-moon gable vent.
• Natural light: A gable can provide a place for a window, bringing light into an upper floor or attic.
• Structural function: The triangular shape efficiently supports the roof and transfers its load down into the walls.
