Today is Valentine’s Day and that means the 30-Day Poetry Coach4aday Challenge is reading a poem about love. SONNET 43 just may be one of the most recognizable poems about love.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote this piece in 1850. It was originally penned in Portuguese. Of all the poems she authored this is without a doubt her most recognizable. If the name Browning sounds familiar when you think of poets, it may be a result of her being married to Robert Browning. reading both of their bios they were probably the first “super couple of poets” if such a title exists. In the genre of romance their courtship involved over them exchanging no fewer than 600 letters to one another.

How Do I Love You?

Often times songs and poems become recognized for memorable lines or verses. That is the case with SONNET 43. It begins with the words found below:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

Universal agreement amongst scholars is this poem was written by Elizabeth to her husband Robert. Today lovers will be exchanging cards from Hallmark trying to capture the emotion of the Brownings.

Here is YouTube clip that includes the entire poem
