We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday has given us the prompt of “Power Pop” songs. The goal is to take the prompt and profile a song that covers that challenge.

Please consider carving out time to read the posts of other bloggers who responded to this music challenge. You will hopefully discover new songs, revisit an old favorite and it is quite possibly learning something interesting.

Suggestions for Song Lyric Sunday

Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not.  If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.  Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

Defining Power Pop

Last week prompt was challenging and so is todays. Learning about different musical genre is one of the benefits of participating in this weekly challenge. Researching the definition of “Power Pop “I learned the following.

Power pop is a more aggressive form of pop rock that is based on catchy, melodic hooks and energetic moods.

Examples of artists that fit this category include The Go-Go’sThe Cars-& Katrina and the Waves.

Walk Like an Egyptian

For the prompt this week I choose a song by the all-female band called The Bangles and their song “Walk Like an Egyptian“. It was released in 1986 and written by an outside member of the band Liam Sternberg. Founded by LA natives Susanna Hoffs (guitar/vocals), and sisters Debbi Peterson (drums/guitar/vocals), and Vicki Peterson (guitar/vocals), and bass player Annette Zilinskas they were the original members. All members except drummer Debbi Peterson sing a verse on this song.

The song became a #1 hit in the United States. I first heard of the song because of Alaa Abdelnaby who was from Egypt and played basketball at Duke University from 1986-1990. He was the first Egyptian born player in the NBA. That song was played often by the Duke Pep Band.

  1. Jim Adams says:

Great choice, but now I will be doing the Egyptian dance the rest of the day. I will raise up my right arm and held it out in front of me, bending it at my elbow in a right angle, then I will bend my wrist, holding my palm flat facing down at another right angle. I will place my left arm behind me and bend it the opposite way, with my forearm pointing down and my flat palm pointing behind me, so my two arms are pointing forward and backward at the same time. I will keep my feet on the floor as I shuffle around.
