This week Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday has given us the prompt of “songs that were turned down by recording artists that went on to become big hits”

The goal is to take the prompt and profile a song that has it part of its lyrics or title.

Please consider carving out time to read the posts of other bloggers who responded to the Song Lyric Sunday challenge.

Rules for Song Lyric Sunday

Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not.  If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.  Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

How Will I Know

Ironic that the prompt this week is to feature songs that were turned down by one artist only to become a big hit for someone else. There is a large list of tunes that fall into this category. My song title How Will I Know” just might be a modified reaction of “Why Didn’t I Know” from those the songs were intended for. The song title I choose was intended for Janet Jackson but was a mega hit for Whitney Houston.

This 1985 hit was written and composed by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam with Janet Jackson in mind but she passed on it. After that a few lyrics were changed for Whitney and it became a top hit. FYI Houston mom is singing background vocals on this song.

Next week the prompt will be “Songs that hit the top of the charts”

Another great ball drop for Whitney Houston to catch….what a shame she died so young. I never liked her big Ballard’s but boy she’d really bounced a dance number , great choice.

  2. She was the right artist for this song, for sure ☺️
