Today for the 30-Day Ingredient Coach4aday Challenge my quest is to find out what materials are used in manufacturing an NBA Game BASKETBALL.

Games need equipment and the sport of BASKETBALL requires a goal and a ball. Some of the least expensive ones that players dribble, pass, and shoot with are made of rubber. NBA game balls are constructed with leather.

Utilizing Leather for NBA Basketballs

Chemistry has produced many synthetic materials that attempt to replicate what we find organically. Leather is one example. Synthetic or composite leather is an artificial type of material that does have some benefits. The materials making up a composite ball permit indoor and outdoor play. Outdoor play wears the ball down quicker so it might not be a good investment for the better composite balls.

Manufacturing NBA Basketballs

Leather basketballs need to be broken in before they are game ready. How they get to that state often take time. Here is a video on how they are manufactured and get to the point where they are ready for an NBA game. Spalding is the Official Game Ball for the NBA.

Each NBA team provides 3 game balls to the officials before a game, and they select one to play with.
