This week our host Jim Adams for SONG LYRIC SUNDAY has provided us the prompt of Cruel/Evil/Horrible/Monster/Wicked.

The choice for me is the song Evil Ways which was made famous in 1969 by the Mexican American Rock Band Santana. The song was not written by any member of the group but instead was penned by Clarence “Sonny” Henry who was a jazz guitarist.

I love the song because of the energy the musicians put into tune about a man wanting his woman to change her Evil Ways.

Here are the lyrics.

Santana was formed in 1966 and they released their first album in 1969 which was the same year they appeared at Woodstock. Their album called Santana after that jumped to Top 10 on the charts.

I am pretty sure everybody in HS and college in 1969 had this album.

This album had great songs that not only included Evil Ways but one of my all time favorite songs Soul Sacrifice. If you have not watched Santana perform this song at Woodstock give it a view on YouTube.

I was quite surprised to learn that one of the original members of Santana Gregg Rolie (keyboards-vocals) left to form Journey with another early member of Santana Neal Schon. In 1971 Gregg was the producer, lead singer, and keyboard artist for the album Santana III, which later became a great critical and commercial success.
