#Quest August 29

I have written about different goals people have and even shared a few of mine. When you are pursuing a goal it becomes a QUEST.

Presently I am attempting to read the Bible from cover to cover and also sample 1,000 unique beers in my lifetime.

The pursuit of reading the entire Bible began for me on January 1, 2019. I read one chapter each morning and currently I have read the entire New Testament and have finished 13 of the 38 books in the Old Testament. I am thinking of reading more than one chapter a day to see if I can finish by the end of 2020.

My other QUEST is at the other end of the moral spectrum. It is attempting to taste 1,000 unique beers in my lifetime. I keep track of my beers using an app on my phone which many craft beer aficionados have called Untapped.

At the present time I have tasted 924 unique beers over the past 7 years. That number grew by one last night thanks to neighbor Jef Lambdin who hooked me up with a Bull Durham Kolsch.

This goal began on January 1, 2014 when I drank 365 unique beers in one calendar year. I was able with the help of friends like Jef (that is a nice way of saying bootleggers) locate enough beverages to drink a different beer each day.

If interested here is my Beer of Day list from 2014. Some of them were excellent and some were what I classified as “One and Done” club. I have no interest in drinking any members of that list again. That includes a Joe Osman favorite beer called Oculto.

I was really hoping that this beer QUEST would be completed in 2020 but the pandemic has restricted my travel and opportunities to sample beers in a brewery. When I go to a brewery I love to get a flight of 4 beers (usually 3 ounce tasters) that I have never tried.

Unlike the QUEST with the Bible I am not going to ratchet up my daily consumption in order to finish. Like many goals I have to stick to my rituals and habits and realize with time I will get there.

I love living in Lumberton NC but with the exception of Your Pie and Adielo’s there is not much chance I get to sample a beer I have not. I appreciate Kevin Fraley at Your Pie bringing new brews to his tap lineup.

The grocery stores in town do not normally any beers on their shelves that I haven’t already tried. When I see one I buy it.

Not every QUEST can be done in a hurry. In my case it is one chapter or beer at a time.
