This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday https://jimadamsauthordotcom.wordpress.com/2021/04/24/peace-out/ has given us the prompt of goodbye but in many different languages. His prompt is arrivederci/Bon-voyage/Ciao/Farewell/Goodbye/Hasta la vista/Sayonara/Shalom.

Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you are able to as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two. Also feel free to offer up your suggestion to this week’s prompt.

Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not.  If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.  Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

We all get to interpret Jim’s prompt anyway we want. That makes Song Lyric Sunday interesting to me. It seemed pretty straightforward that my song choice needed to have some international connection. I choose a 1957 Irving Berlin song called “Sayonara”. Berlin wrote over 1,000 songs in his life. He also wrote 17 complete scores for Broadway Musicals including “Annie Get Your Gun”.

The song I selected was the theme of a movie with the same name based on a James Michener novel called Sayonara. Michener wrote what many critics have labeled “Fictional Documentaries”.

The Lyrics to Sayonara are the shortest of any previous Song Lyric Song submission I have made previously.

Lyrics to Sayonara by Irving Berlin

Sayonara, Japanese goodbye
Whisper sayonara but you mustn’t cry

Sayonara, if it must be so
Whisper sayonara, smiling as we go

No more we stop to see pretty cherry blossoms
No more we ‘neath the tree looking at the sky

Sayonara, sayonara
Goodbye

I want to show two videos that showcase the song.

The first video is the opening scene of the movie “Sayonara”. This Warner Brothers film starred Marlon Brando, Patricia Owens, James Garner, and Martha Scott.

The second video is a YouTube audio of the Irving Berlin’s song performed by Pat Kirby. Whose real name was Patricia Querubin. She might be best remembered for her stint on the Steve Allen variety show “Tonight“.

Until next Sunday I offer up a Japanese goodbye-SAYONARA.
