Spirit in the Sky

My song this week is “Spirit in the Sky“. It was written in 1969 by a Jewish man who at one time in his life was a goat farmer. That goat farmer/songwriter name is Norman Greenbaum. The song became a hit in 1970.

Greenbaum began his musical career while a student at Boston University, playing area coffeehouses before relocating to the West Coast during the mid-’60s and forming Dr. West’s Medicine Show and Jugband. Writing “Spirit in the Sky” his goal was to write a religious rock song. Even though he was raised Jewish he substituted the Hebrew word for God with Jesus. The song hit the charts in the US in 1970 climbing all the way to #3.

In the United Kingdom, this song has reached #1 three times by three different acts. The first was Greenbaum’s version in 1970, then in 1986 Doctor and The Medics took it to #1, and finally in 2003 for Gareth Gates and The Kumars.

This has been used in many TV shows and films
