This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday has given us the prompt Endless/Eternity/Everlasting/Forever/Infinity/Omega.

Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you are able to as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two.  Also feel free to offer up your suggestion to this week’s prompt.

Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not.  If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.  Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

I debated over several choices this week which was fun. I almost went with a spiritual hymn titled “Leaning on Everlasting Arms” which the Praise Band at First Presbyterian Church is Lumberton has performed wonderfully. Shout out to Les Noble, Christian Roseboro, and Heather Miller in particular during COVID.

Yet I finally settled on Rod Stewart‘s song “Forever Young” released in 1988, mainly because of the first few lines. It is a Sunday and this song’s spiritual optimism and prayer resonates with me.

May the good Lord be with ya down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness surround you when you’re far from home
And may you grow to be proud, dignified, and true
And do unto others as you would have done to you

Forever Young” was released by Rod Stewart in 1988 on his Out of Order Album. Rod Stewart became a recognizable star in America in 1971 after his 3rd solo album “Every Picture Tells A Story”. That album included hits like “Maggie May” and “Mandolin Wind”. My friend Larry Pittman reminded me that the structure of the lyrics in this song is very similar to a Bob Dylan song of the same title.

“Forever Young” became sort of a de facto theme song for NBC Sports in 1989. It became the network’s soundtrack for a year-in-review with Olympics, World Series, Fiesta Bowl, and Super Bowl XXIII.

Here are the lyrics:

May the good Lord be with ya down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness surround you when you’re far from home
And may you grow to be proud, dignified, and true
And do unto others as you would have done to you

Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart you’ll always stay

Forever young, forever young
Forever young, forever young

May good fortune be with you, may your guiding light be strong
Build a stairway to heaven with a prince or a vagabond

And may you never love in vain
And in my heart you will remain

Forever young, forever young
Forever young, forever young
For-ever young
For-ever young
Yeah!

And when you finally fly away I’ll be hopin’ that I served you well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime no one can ever tell

But whatever road you choose
I’m right behind you, win or lose

Forever young, forever young
Forever young, forever young
For-ever young
For-ever young
For! For-ever young
For-ever young

Here is the music video that Rod Stewart released for the song. He wrote the song in honor of his children.

Next week the prompt will be Blossoms/Cherry/Flowers until then I hope everyone stays “Forever Young”.
