#Promises March 24

Sometimes in moments of fear or desperation we reach out to God in prayer with all types of PROMISES. I am sensing that is happening a lot right now.

I can remember one of the PROMISES I made back in elementary school out of fear.

In 4th grade I was pretty sure that there was going to be WWIII and it was going to involve nuclear bombs. That was because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I prayed a lot and made PROMISES I would become a model child if we were spared a nuclear attack.

The crisis was averted and my PROMISE to model exemplary behavior was on display for a short period of time.

During Hurricane Florence in 2018 I was quite certain that two gigantic pecan trees was destined to fall on our house. For the four days that the wind and rain blew those trees swayed dangerously back and forth.

I made a PROMISE that it the house was spared I would get the trees cut down. In July 2019 I followed thru on that PROMISE.

Before Hurricane Florence

Two large pecan trees

After Hurricane Florence

Two trees removed

In these two examples I had fear driving me to make PROMISES to God and myself. Each one had a distinct outcomes. In the first I PROMISED to change and in the second to eliminate a threat.

I believe we all make PROMISES to take steps to change our lives. Sometimes that moment occurs at our darkest hour. When the fear goes away we often encounter promissory amnesia. The prayer and commitment to change becomes easy to forget.

If you find yourself making PROMISES during this time of uncertainty with the pandemic it might be a nudge from God. It might be wise to write it down and truly consider how you can make that PROMISE become a reality.

When we make a PROMISE especially in a time of fear or deep reflection it often is what the best version of ourselves really should look like. Without the element of fear we might not ever see or think that way.

Integrity starts with us keeping our word especially PROMISES we make to ourselves and God.
