One of the least glamourous fundamentals in the game of basketball is the PIVOT.

The PIVOT is what gives a basketball player so many advantages when he is in possession of the ball. A PIVOT is not just an effective fundamental in basketball it has tremendous value in life especially to entrepreneurs and all types of leaders.

Last week I listened to Kevin Systrom who founded Instagram. He made an interesting point about ideas. Sometimes as an entrepreneur you have to PIVOT with your idea or business model. He offered up some wonderful examples.

He talked about YouTube’s intent to become a dating site, bubble wrap starting out as wallpaper, and play dough initial market being a tool to remove stains or marks from wall paper. Each of these business ideas had to undergo a PIVOT in order to achieve success.

We all have ideas but many of us our reluctant to consider that what that idea requires is a PIVOT. In basketball you have to utilize the PIVOT to escape pressure. Don’t discount your ideas but be willing to do a PIVOT if it is needed.
