  2. Independence: The flag was first officially hoisted on October 1, 1960, when this country gained independence from British colonial rule. It replaced the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom.
  3. National Flag Day: The government designated October 1st as National Flag Day. On this day, the flag is ceremonially raised and celebrated across the country.
