#Persistence April 5

There are so many leadership stories on the value of PERSISTENCE. During the 2021 NCAA Basketball Tournament which ends tonight there have been several examples given.

One example was about Florida State University’s seventy-two Year old Head Basketball Coach Leonard Hamilton. He has been the Head Coach at FSU since 2002. His FSU teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament the past five years. His teams didn’t make the the tournament until he was in year seven. He persisted and I might add someone in a leadership position at FSU had the patience to believe in his PERSISTENCE. There have been countless examples of players being encouraged by a coach to stick with it.

The world is full of examples in both sports, business, and life.

John Wooden didn’t win his first national basketball championship title until his 16th season at UCLA.

Starbucks didn’t reach store #5 until 13 years into its history.

Sam Walton (Walmart) didn’t open his 2nd store until 7 yrs after starting his company.

Thomas Edison made1,000 attempts before inventing the light bulb.

Walt Disney went bankrupt after failing at several businesses. He was even fired from a newspaper for lacking imagination and good ideas.

Henry Ford’s early businesses failed and left him broke 5 times before he founded Ford Motor Company.

Dr. Seuss’s first book was rejected by 27 publishers before it was accepted.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. received a C in Public Speaking from Crozier Seminary.

So two takeaways:

  1. If you are a leader develop the skill and ability to evaluate someone’s PERSISTENCE. If you find someone with great PERSISTENCE and purpose encourage and believe in them. You will find a long term reward. Find someone today to encourage.
  2. Remember the power of staying PERSISTENT if others have succeeded so can you.

Napoleon Hill said it quite well “Most great people have achieved their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.”

If you are a leader value PERSISTENCE.
