For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today the recipient is MARY ANN MASTERS
I first got to know Dr. Mary Ann Masters O.D. as a patient of hers back in the late 1980’s when I was coaching the basketball team at UNC Pembroke. At that time Mary Ann had an office in Pembroke, NC. She impressed me right off the bat as a very polished southern lady.
Mary Ann and John Masters
I was always looking for opportunities to expose my college players to things outside of basketball. I had them do practice interviews with the career center on campus, we had motivational speakers come to practice, and I convinced Mary Ann to do an etiquette seminar for my team.
That seminar covered how to treat a woman in certain social settings and table settings at a formal dinner or banquet. My players had talent and they got invited to post season award banquets and I wanted them prepared. Anyone that goes to their first formal banquet the array of silverware, glassware, and plateware can be intimidating. Mary Ann knew her stuff and made it simple for my team to understand and be comfortable. Today UNC Pembroke actually offers a business etiquette dinner that covers much of what Mary Ann did back in the 1980’s.

March 17th-Mary Ann Masters
Mary Ann is more than just OD, she has a passion for the arts, her church, and her community. She also is proud of her family and knows a lot about genealogy and how various people are connected in our community.

Those interests led her to becoming very engaged with the Robeson County Arts Council.
She holds various leadership positions at First Presbyterian Church from serving as a Deacon, Elder, and singing in the choir.
Giving a shout out today to a refined southern lady who looks to serve others.
