For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today the recipient is JOHN HASKINS

Last Friday John Haskins ended a fantastic career as a coach and educator at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He coached his last game in the 2024 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament. Today at 12 Noon UNCP will announce his replacement at a press conference.

After thirty-five years at UNCP he went out on top having won back-to-back Conference Carolinas Championships. In 1989 I got to hire John as my assistant coach, and it was a decision I have never regretted.

Rules of the Challenge

Organizing and participating in the 30-Day Shout Coach4aday Challenge is very simple. Below are the steps.

March 18th-John Haskins

Describing John in one word is a challenge, but “accomplished” comes close. He excels in numerous areas, embodying qualities that make him an exceptional husband, father, brother, friend, athlete, and coach.

Multiple times I have told people if there was decathlon of athletic events in Robeson County for individuals in his age group just go ahead and give him the gold medal. Golf, pickleball, badminton, basketball, racquetball, and bowling would all be activities he is gifted at.

Even with his extensive accomplishments, John remains a steadfast friend who maximizes the potential of every team he coaches and every moment in a day. Retirement, often associated with relaxation, is not something John Haskins is inclined toward; he thrives on staying active and engaged, rejecting the notion of slowing down or settling into a rocking chair.

Blessed to call him a friend and proud of all the influence he has had on many including me.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
