October 29th Topic

This week in the mail I received a letter inviting me to join AAA Travel. It reminded me of my dad who on any road trip beyond an hour radius in the car traveled with a paper map.

He did that until my late sister Bridget went to school to become a travel agent and convinced him to join AAA and have them send him a TripTik.

Our mind has many maps that guide our travel thru life. Those maps can be grouped into two big divisions.

  1. The way things are-REALITY
  2. The way things should be-Our VALUES

What happens in life is our brain is convinced that our map is the correct one. That influences our behavior, attitude, speech, and thinking. Sometimes we have to remember that our paradigm may not be accurate, and we need to be ready to change. That ability to change our mind is the secret to growing as a leader. It is not easy. Never forget that the way we view a problem may actually be the problem.

Love the story below about what happens when our map is based solely on our values and hubris not reality. It was published some years ago in Proceedings a magazine of the US Naval Institute.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
