For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today the recipient is MAC CAMPBELL.
In 1998 I got hired as Director of Athletics at UNC Pembroke by Chancellor Joe Oxendine and he challenged me to elevate the fundraising efforts of the Athletic Department. I began a systematic method of asking key constituents what they thought. One of the people I had a conversation was Dallas McQueen “Mac” Campbell Jr. from Elizabethtown, NC who was a member of the Board of Trustees at the time. That conversation started a friendship that has spanned over 26 years.

Here is how to participate.
- Identify who gets the daily Shout-Out and make sure they know you are recognizing them.
- Describe why you giving them a Shout-Out-what are they doing that is notable?
- Do this daily for 30 Days posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

March 8th-Mac Campbell
When I began as Director of Athletics, I truly was the lost ball in the high weeds in many responsibilities the position required. One was how to increase participation in the booster club. Meeting Mac Campbell changed that not only for me but for UNC Pembroke. He took me under his wing and introduced me to many concepts that were being used at NC State where he was heavily involved in the Wolfpack Club. Getting to meet Bobby Purcell and have him share fundraising fundamentals with a novice became a game changer. Mac also got Jimmy Bass to come to campus in my first year and offer up guidance.

Mac graduated from UNC Pembroke in 1968 and was involved in a family business called Campbell Oil. Over time he volunteered, contributed, and guided me with almost daily 7:00 a.m. phone calls over a span of 15 years. Those calls were always uplifting and encouraging and framed with what could he do to help.

If you live in Southeastern NC Mac Campbell and his family are synonymous with servant leadership. That is why I give them a big shout-out! Blessed to call him a friend.
