#Lift February 23

Two weeks ago, I stumbled on an article about Naval Warfare. One of the new things I learned was the amount of LIFT planes needed to launch off an aircraft carrier. You can learn more about planes taking off at Monroe Aerospace Blog

Getting a plane in the air still is a miracle to me. Launching one at sea off a very short runaway is mind blowing. Maybe everybody else on the planet already knew that planes take off into the wind. Admitting this might jeopardize my friendship with skydivers and pilots like Jaclyn Donovan and Mac Campbell. With the wind flowing over the wing, the airplane has additional LIFT to help it get airborne.

There is life lesson analogy in that concept. You have to take on wind (obstacles) head on to elevate your status or position in life. The good times or wind at our back is not going provide what we need to fly.

Poem about Lift-Off and Flying

For the 30-Day Poetry Coach4aday Challenge I went searching for a poem that would address flying and lift off. I decided to read ‘Takeoff” by Richard Allen Taylor. What resonated with me was the author talks about the misperception he had about flying. He addresses it with the lines below:

The laws of physics tell us, get air moving fast enough over a well-shaped wing, it has to rise.”

We all need to keep in mind that when trouble or headwinds confront us that is an opportunity for us to LIFT-OFF. We have to accept that we are the pilot of that airplane called life. Don’t bemoan a strong wind find a way to for it to LIFT and rise above.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
