#Island February 21

Over the past four days I have called an ISLAND home. Enjoying a long weekend with friends at Hilton Head SC has been fantastic.

It may be hard for modern day tourists to Hilton Head to understand but it was not really developed until the 1950’s. In fact, the town of Hilton Head was not even incorporated until 1983. What Hilton Head was going back to the 1700’s was a series of “plantations” that grew many diverse agriculture crops including rice, indigo, sugar cane, and of course cotton.

So today for the 30-Day Poetry Coach4aday Challege I decided to go searching for a poem to read about an ISLAND.

Coney Island

This poem “Coney Island” was written by Sara Teasdale. She is often praised for bringing a women’s perspective to topics like beauty, nature, love, and death. She was a person who even though she came from a wealthy family found life difficult and troubling. She died in 1933 by taking her own life. Many of her poems had a dark side or highlighted the challenges of life.

Perspective is one of things that reading poems can produce. I didn’t share Sara Teasdale point of view about ISLAND life this past week but rather peace, tranquility, and blessings of friends.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
