Today for the 30-Day Ingredient Coach4aday Challenge my item is not food but the iPhone.

Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007. This device is estimated to be owned by some 1 billion people worldwide. What makes it so valuable to us is the operating system (iOS) that allows it to support millions of different apps. For the record Android is the most popular operating system.

Materials used in an iPhone

Mobile phones are more than just electronic components that are made with a lot of different metals. Researching the list of materials on Google produces a lot of articles with most pointing out the most dominant metals.

Isabel von Kessel wrote a good piece in 2017 on Statista that you can read here.

Another good piece on what iPhones is made of was written by Ananya Pal for Storymaps. You can read that article here.

Aluminum is the dominant metal in iPhones making up nearly 25% of the devices mass. Iron is the second largest amount of metal in these phones. In addition to these common metals there are some rare earth elements that are part of each phone.

If you want to see a great display of what and where each type of metal or rare earth element is used in the phone go here.
