#Hermit September 4

This month the #Coach4adayChallenge for September is to profile a biography of someone. Today I have chosen a man who got dubbed with the nickname, the “North Pond HERMIT”.

Christopher Thomas Knight walked into the woods of Maine in 1986 with the goal of disappearing. For 27 years he did just that. Most stressed out adults often entertain a fantasy of getting away from it all. Knight, did it.

My intrigue with this story comes from where North Pond is located. It is a large headwater pond in the Belgrade Lakes system of Maine. My late brother Thomas lived in Belgrade Lakes, ME. North Pond was not too far from his house.

There is a fantastic book written by Michael Finkel called The Stranger in the Woods about Christopher Knight. Finkel in a series of extensive interviews with him explores how he survived for 27 years with no interaction with others and stayed warm.

Knight admitted to over 1,000 robberies at “summer camps or cabins” that were located on North Pond. Those larcenies kept him stocked with food and supplies but caused home owners stress. The book also explores his reasons for becoming a HERMIT.

Finkel is interviewed about his book in the YouTube clip below.

You can google North Pond HERMIT Camp and see photos of where he lived.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
