Being alone in a GYM can be a “happy place” if you have a goal and basketball. It can be happier with a crowd.

Our lives sometimes get broken into different chapters. From the age of 9 until I was in my mid-40’s my days involved spending lots of time in a GYM. I love the game of basketball. Like many others I spent countless hours attempting to improve my skills. After college, my time in the GYM became part of my 23 year career of teaching and coaching the game of basketball.

Gym is a an abbreviation for the word gymnasium. Today most people would think of it as a large room used for various indoor sports including basketball. The word comes from the Greeks that they used to describe “A place for exercise.”

Sounds emitting from a basketball court still resonate with me today. The unique noise a ball makes bouncing on a maple floor is one example. Squeaking of rubber soled shoes and the chatter between teammates during a game are other happy sounds. A basketball passing thru the net makes a sweet and subtle sound.

I found a sound clip from SoundBerries.com that captures some of what I have described above.

Basketball dreams for individuals and teams often begin in a GYM. Players spend countless hours imagining they are asked to execute a game winning shot. If they miss they can do it again. When you let your mind wander, visualize, and dream inside a GYM it becomes a happy place.

Leaving you with the joy that the time in the GYM can provide.
