Stumbled on a website that details the top grossing film from each state.

That seemed like a perfect fact for the 30-Day State Trivia Coach4aday Challenge. The criteria that the website used was the geographic setting of the FILM needed to be in that state. For instance, for Nevada, it was The Hangover.

Close Encounters of a Third Kind

First a disclaimer, I love the Steven Spielberg movie “Close Encounters of a Third Kind“. It is a 1977 science fiction adventure about a group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Played by Richard Dreyfuss) witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a “sunburn” from its bright lights to prove it. Roy refuses to accept an explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his life to pursue the truth about UFOs.

How the FILM is tied to Wyoming is because of Devil’s Tower. It is located in Crook County, Wyoming, and is the first natural formation in the United States to be declared a national monument in 1906.

Rock climbers know this site very well. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest climbing areas in North America.

The FILM is the highest-grossing film never to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Most estimates place it around 340 million dollars not bad considering it cost about 20 million to shoot.
