For December 2023, several of us are participating in the “30-Day ANATOMY Coach4aday Challenge.” My choice today is the DIAPHRAGM.
During this challenge, the participants select a bone or muscle in the human body, providing details about its location and physiological significance.
How the Challenge Works
- Identify one anatomical part of the body.
- Describe what its purpose is.
- Describe where it is located.

Identify Your Choice
The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located beneath the lungs, separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
Purpose
It serves as the primary muscle involved in the process of breathing. When it contracts, it flattens, creating a vacuum in the chest that allows the lungs to expand, facilitating inhalation. As it relaxes, the diaphragm returns to its dome shape, aiding in the exhalation of air from the lungs.
Location
The diaphragm is located beneath the lungs and separates the thoracic cavity (which contains the heart and lungs) from the abdominal cavity (which contains the digestive organs).
