Today’s contribution to the 30-Day Musical Instrument Coach4aday Challenge is on the CLAVICHORD.

In the late Middle Ages, a rectangular stringed keyboard was popular. It was called the Clavichord. It was a big step towards the invention of the piano. On the Getty Images website there are lots of photos on how this instrument was also decorated.

The clavichord first appeared in the 14th century and became popular during the Renaissance Era. Pressing a key would send a brass rod, called a tangent, to strike the string and cause vibrations that emit sound over a range of four to five octaves.

Some experts believe that this was an instrument best played in intimate settings to experience its sounds to the fullest.
