2020 has been the year of just some unbelievable events. Back in late May I saw something that I wanted to write about but kept putting off. I became fascinated with CIVIL WAR pension recipients.

The reason is that Irene Triplett (who lived in North Carolina) who was the last person receiving a CIVIL WAR pension died on May 31, 2020. She was 90 years old.

The war ended in 1865 but some 155 years later there was still at least one person getting a pension check in 2020. Just another amazing 2020 event and fact.

Irene Triplett lived in Wilkesboro, NC and was born January 9, 1930. She was one of the many who received a pension because she was either a CIVIL War Veteran or in her case a dependent.  Irene’s dad was a solider in the war.

I recommend you read a blog post I found on a site called The Cotton Boll Conspiracy It appears the site has been dormant since 2019 but this article about Irene Triplett and her father Mose Triplett is fascinating. Mose Triplett was born in 1846. It is amazing that two generations of the Triplett family spanned 174 years.

At age 78, Mose Triplett married Lydia “Elida” Hall, who then 28. They had five children, three of whom did not survive infancy. But Irene, and her younger brother Everette, did. Mose Triplett was 83 when Irene was born in 1930 and nearly 87 when her brother Everette came along.

The amount of the CIVIL WAR pension was $73.13 a month.

I realize that most lists of 2020 Bizarre Events won’t mention the end of CIVIL WAR pensions after 155 years but it was a quirk I found noteworthy.
