ALTRUISM is certainly not a word I use in my writing or vocabulary. I need to write about people who practice this quality more often. I also need to grow the altruistic aspects of my own life.
A simple definition is a selfless concern for the well-being of others.
It is not easy to think of others in a world filled with messaging about what we need to covet in order to be satisfied. Often those signals lead us to enter a race we cannot win. A race to collect more and more material possessions. We are lured into a competition to compare our financial status in life to others. That battle results in us forgetting about the importance of being altruistic.
Mick Jagger warned us about chasing people and things in one of his songs with these lyrics:
I can’t get no satisfaction, no satisfaction
No satisfaction, no satisfaction
Some other quotes that might help all of us experience ALTRUISM include:
“A day wasted on others is not wasted on one’s self.”
– Charles Dickens
“When you are able to shift your inner awareness to how you can serve others, and when you make this the central focus of your life, you will then be in a position to know true miracles in your progress toward prosperity.”
– Wayne Dyer
“Love only grows by sharing. You can only have more for yourself by giving it away to others.”
– Brian Tracy
“Let us try to teach generosity and ALTRUISM, because we are born selfish. Let us understand what our own selfish genes are up to, because we may then at least have the chance to upset their designs, something that no other species has ever aspired to do.”
– Richard Dawkins
