To take an OATH is to swear to create a vow with God. That is pretty serious stuff.

Taking an OATH can occur in a lot of settings. People take an OATH to become an elected official, military or law enforcement, get married, and becoming a US citizen.

An OATH becomes a promise to a higher power that you will tell the truth and uphold certain standards. In essence you are staking your name and reputation on the fact you do as you promise.

The real importance of an OATH is not for the individual taking it but to those that they serve. Citizens want to trust sworn law enforcement officers. Voters want to trust elected officials that take an OATH of office. It is sad when someone takes advantage of that trust for selfish gain or pleasure.

I believe that most people uphold the OATH they take. I also believe that there is a growing number of people that take an OATH that do it without much commitment. That choice has many consequences.

In legal matters lying under OATH is perjury and you can face jail time. Failing to live up to an OATH means facing divine displeasure.

Integrity, reputation, and your name are on the line when you take an OATH. A sacred promise should not be taking lightly.
