June 2026 several of us are going to take on theĀ 30-Day Movie Scene Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share a YouTube clip from a movie and explain what is intriguing about that particular scene. It is a simple daily activity of sharing a Movie Scene. My focus today is on the JENGA scene from the 2015 film ā€œThe Big Short “

The Big Short tells the story of investors who predicted the collapse of the U.S. housing market before the 2008 financial crisis. They bet against the market while most banks and experts ignored the warning signs. The film explains complex financial concepts through humor and highlights the greed and failures that contributed to the crisis. One of the humorous ways was thru using the game of Jenga to explain bonds.

This month marks the 78th consecutive month that friendsĀ Jeff NeelonĀ andĀ Jaclyn DonovanĀ have taken on some sort of challenge. For June 2026 participants simply commit to sharing one movie scene from a film. Each scene just needs to be accompanied by a simple explanation on what is happening or why it was chosen. Hope you decide to join us or enjoy the clips we share.

Day 27-Jenga

Jared Vennett played by Ryan Gosling uses stacked Jenga blocks to represent mortgage-backed securities. His partner is Michael Burry played by Christian Bale and the two of them explain how many of the underlying mortgages are weak and likely to fail. As they remove blocks, the tower becomes unstable and eventually collapses, illustrating how the entire financial system could crumble when homeowners began defaulting on their loans. They even use Anthony Boudain to explain a CDO.

The scene exemplifies some of the humor the film incorporates.
