For the month of May I took on another 30 Day Challenge. My goal was to complete four online certifications/courses.
This is the first month I did not get everything completed in thirty days. The good news is three certifications are finished and the fourth course began in late May but will not conclude until June 9th.
Here is a RECAP of what I undertook and what I learned plus a few tips.
1. The first course I completed was offered by Google and it was called Analytics for Beginners. The course primarily focused on how to track traffic for a website. It educated me to using an interface and reports, and how to set up dashboards and shortcuts. It also touched on how to analyze basic audience, acquisition, and behavior reports. It was all free. You did have to complete proficiency exams after each module to advance on. I am now certified at least as a beginner in Google Analytics.
2. The second online certification was a course I completed on Alison.com called Transformational Leadership The course was lots of approaches and techniques you can use to improve relationship with any team you are part of. One big takeaway is that most problems can fit in to one of three areas-Attitude, Ability, Resources. I am quite confident that I reinforced some leadership principles and came away with a few stories by completing this course. It took about 7 hours of online time to finish.
This course was free but I decided to spring $18.00 to get a few course extras like my score on exams and of course the online certificate.
3. The third online course was offered by Coursea. I enrolled in Improving Communication Skills taught by Dr. Maurice Schweitzer from the University of Pennsylvania.
This class was the most intense taking twelve plus hours to complete. It exposed me to a number of fascinating approaches related to communication. It emphasized the importance along with ways to enhance trust. It opened my mind of how to approach negotiations, and how to apologize. I choose not to pay for this course and did audit version which was free. I finished this four week course in little over two weeks.
I loved what I learned from Dr. Schweitzer and how he utilized riveting stories to drive home teaching points. Recommend this course for any leader.
4. My 4th online certification was complete serendipity. I had a conversation with a friend about a book on Enneagram he was reading and encouraged me to explore. I was curious on how that tool might help me as a coach and leader work with groups and teams. The next day on LinkedIn I saw this offer from John Semeraro the founder of Leading Wins.
His offer was to teach leaders about using this tool to better serve others and to create self awareness. It is amazing how God works in our lives. I recommend you consider contacting John to work with your team.
The really cool thing about this weekly online course is the diverse leaders I am in the class with. They include one of my former basketball players who happens to be a Gallup Certified Coach Juontonio Pinckney, a NCAA Div. II Head Baseball Coach Lee Parks, and Executive Director of Charleston SC Non-Profit Lauren Herterich.
I am not only learning from John’s expertise about the Enneagram but I am receiving lots of leadership nuggets from Juontonio, Lee, and Lauren. The class will finish up on June 9th.
I will say completing 4 online certifications has been my most challenging 30 Day Challenge. It required a lot of time and made me brush up on my note taking skills. The big plus is it has caused me to grow and think.
Tomorrow is June 1st so it is on to another 30 Day Challenge. I will reveal what it is in my next post.
