For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting TRANSYLVANIA County.
Transylvania County, located in Western North Carolina, was established in 1861 by combining portions of Henderson and Jackson counties. The county’s name is derived from two Latin words: “Trans,” meaning “across,” and “Sylva,” meaning “woods.” Thus, Transylvania translates to “Across the Woods.”
The County Seat is Brevard, NC. A map of the county is shown below outlines in red.
County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
- Share that fact along with where it is located with others
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms
August 14th-Transylvania and Waterfalls
If you like waterfalls than Transylvania County is a place for you. There are 250 of them located in the county. One of them is Whitewater Falls which has a 400 foot drop.
Two other facts about the county include the following:
Pisgah National Forest: A significant portion of Transylvania County is covered by the Pisgah National Forest, a vast expanse of protected land that offers a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and mountain biking.
Cultural Hub: The county seat, Brevard, is a vibrant cultural hub, known for its thriving arts scene, including the Brevard Music Center, which hosts an annual summer music festival that attracts world-class musicians and visitors from around the country.
