#Glue July 15

For Day 15 of the 30-Day Ingredient Coach4aday Challenge I am learning about what goes into manufacturing School GLUE.

In a few weeks parents will be doing back to school shopping for their children. Elementary age students often have a list of supplies that include pencils, paper, crayons, and GLUE. One popular brand from my childhood was Elmer’s.

History of Elmer’s

Kate Kelly has an interesting website called America Comes Alive. She did a fascinating piece on Elmer’s including its history dating back to 1947. The product was introduced to America by Borden’s. To read that post click here.

Ingredients

School glue is often called white glue and how it is made today is different than when it came into the market. Elmer’s is made from an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, and propylene. A chemist might call it an aliphatic rubbery polymer.

Elmer’s glue is acid-free, making it non-toxic.
