Today’s contribution to the 30-Day Musical Instrument Coach4aday Challenge is on the XYLOPHONE.

Playing Scrabble if you have to lead off with an X many people will go with spelling Xylophone.

There seems to be consensus that Bob Becker just might be the greatest Xylophone musician in the world. More about his talents later in the post.

Origin of the Xylophone

Simply put this instrument is graduated, tuned wooden bars supported at non-vibrating points. The noise comes from being struck with sticks or padded mallets. Musical historians are confident its origins were in Southeast Asia.

Somewhere along the way in America a child’s toy became known as Xylophone. This Deposit Photo link has lots of images of the different varieties.

Bob Becker

In 1971 Becker founded the percussion group NEXUS. The members include Bob Becker, Bill Cahn, Russell Hartenberger and Garry Kvistad. Each of them is virtuoso based on individual talents.
