While I was speaking at Radford University last week Susan Taylor the Director of Advancement shared a list of leadership books she has read.

On the list was the book Strengths Quest by Donald Clifton which we both had read.

Another book was Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. I have actually featured a Brene Brown video this week on my website under the “Video of the Week”.

Here is that video which is on Empathy

Learning from the leadership of Dr. Brene Brown

Dr. Brene Brown s a research professor at the University of Houston. One of the topics she writes and speaks about a lot is VULNERABILITY. She studies human connection — our ability to empathize, belong, love. When you do all those things you are exposing yourself to being vulnerable.

I am looking forward to reading this book. The summaries and reviews all hit on some common themes. One is that people spend way too much time striving for perfection versus accomplishments. Often our reality is being incorrectly compared to some fictional account of how good other have it. That is a myth that will get us nowhere.

The second theme is that experiencing and embracing VULNERABILITY is the path to experiencing love, belonging, joy, courage, and creativity.

Here is a video of Brene discussing VULNERABILTY.

Thanks Susan for informing me about the great leadership advice that Brene Brown delivers about a lot of things especially VULNERABILITY.
