#Survival February 18

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Jeff Kauflin is a writer for Forbes. He did some fascinating research on the SURVIVAL of top 50 Companies from 1917 to 2017. I read an article of his that was dated September 28, 2017 titled America’s Top 50 Companies 1917-2017.

Corporate and employee survival

I won’t give away the entire article but only one of the top 6 US companies in 2017 were even a company in 1967. Of the top 25 companies in the US in 2017, only 4 were a top 50 company in 1917. One of those 4 was Sears, who is currently battling bankruptcy.

People have a hard time with change. We have to look at the facts, and it is difficult for business to stay on top. There are so many ways it can have its SURVIVAL threatened. When a business is shuttered so too are many jobs.

In 1917 the largest companies in the US were oil, steel, and mining. Today it is tech companies.

Diane Mulcahy the author of the book The Gig Economy points out some interesting points about employee SURVIVAL. It is not large companies that create the most full-time jobs but small businesses. Her book is call for everyone to consider having a side hustle or gig to survive. She believes we should be interested in doing work well versus pursuing a job. I am enjoying reading her thoughts.

The Gig Economy by Diane Mulcahy

Here are some of her bullet points

*Full-time employees are the most expensive and least flexible source of labor for companies. When times get tough labor is the first place a company looks to make cost reductions.

*Individuals who file a Schedule C tax form has gone from 8.5% in 1980 to over 16% in 2015. More people are creating a side hustle.

* That in 1995 the Dept of Labor deemed that our labor incentives in the US encourage employers to use contractors to produce significant labor savings.

So in the world of business SURVIVAL might not be related to what is strong today. For individuals it might be more about doing work well versus getting a job with a company that might not survive.
