#Steps August 14

I average traveling about 6 miles on the days when I walk 18 holes during a round of golf.

That equates to about 12,000 STEPS. On days when I don’t play golf I am around 2 miles or 4,000 STEPS. Over the course of a year I probably walked close but not quite 1,000 miles.

Well those STEPS don’t cut it when I compare myself to a Canadian who had a mid-life crisis in 2000 and set out to go walk around the world without stopping.

The longest walk around the world was completed by a former neon-sign salesman, Jean Beliveau. He walked 46,600 miles around 64 countries. The trip took him 11 years to complete and he began on August 18, 2000.

Here is a TED Talk about his adventure-his native language is French so his English is not the best but good enough to undersand.

One man who took STEPS around the world for 11 years

His 11 years of continually taking STEPS to travel around the world taught him many things. He stayed in 1600 strangers homes and realized that different people are not bad people.

He also said that a walking companion in South America taught him the really poor people in this world are the ones that only have material possessions.

I have no plans to hike around the world but Jean Beliveau reinforced a thought in me. All journeys whether long or short begin with the first STEP.
