#Soundscapes December 5

A couple of weeks ago I got to listen to Bernie Krause talk about SOUNDSCAPES. I was amazed at what impact sounds can have on our world. Researching the concept confirmed a perception I had that everything in nature is connected much of it thru SOUNDSCAPES.

Wikipedia defines it as a sound or combination of sounds that forms or arises from an immersive environment.”

Bernie has been recording SOUNDSCAPES for 45 years. He states that SOUNDSCAPES are created from three basic sources.

1. Geophony-Non-Biological sounds-examples might include the wind and running water.

2. Biophony-all the sounds generated by organisms in a particular habitat.

3. Anthrophony-all the sounds created by humans.

I encourage you to watch and listen to the TED Talk below on SOUNDSCAPES

The geophony and biophony soundscapes are being dramatically changed by the sounds human makes. Bernie Krause points out much is being lost everyday. We need to protect what is left.

When we understand that we all are connected in many ways including sound it is humbling. Take time to listen to the SOUNDSCAPES everywhere you go they may not last forever.
